23/03/10 Live Local Campaign: Logo Mockup.

Live Local Campaign

Responsibilities: Concepts & Artwork.

Technologies: Illustrator CS4

The Live Local Campaign is a non-profit effort in California that aims to encourage people to live where they work, reducing strain on the environment. This mockup was designed for a client who was making a proposal for the campaign - It's not the official logo of the campaign, but instead a proposed beginning.

They wanted a logo that encompassed the local area and campaign: Mount Tam, sun, earth tones, and of course the commute. My mockup was intended to be an accurate and affordable depiction of what they wanted and ended up hitting right on the mark. In all, 3 samples were made. The first was a bit too vague, the second a little closer, and the third was their final choice. All completed in under 5 hours.

25/01/10 Aadi & Oakley: Set of Labels for Organic Soaps.

Screen of printing artwork for labels

Responsibilities: Artwork Concepts & Production.

Technologies: Pen + Paper, Illustrator CS4

Aadi & Oakley is a tiny Victoria business preparing to sell soap to Vancouver Island in the summer or winter of 2010. They face a lot of competition, so they're using design to customize their brand and fine-tune their vision in hopes of standing out from the crowd.

This project includes labels, business cards, illustration assets, and branding consultation.

12/07/08 _Blitware: Icon for Driver Robot software.

the initial design of the driver robot icon

Responsibilities: Illustration & Software Integration.

Technologies: Illustrator CS4, Photoshop CS4

This was a fun project. The icon shown above isn't the version that was used in the end, but it's the one I prefered. I was in charge of sketching some rough ideas out and bouncing them off of the guys in charge at _Blitware. Once a version was settled on, I polished it and integrated it into the design of the software, as well as made some adjustments to the splash image.

2008 - 2010 DM Contact: Print Materials.

Responsibilities: Design, Direction & Proofing.

Technologies: Illustrator CS4, Photoshop CS4

Here is a gallery of some print work I did for the company DM Contact.

This work reached the hands of thousands of customers and affiliates. I was involved in the process from the start until delivery to printers. I was in charge of proofing, communicating with printing companies, and ensuring the final product turned out exactly as intended. While this gallery isn't a comprehensive example of my print experience, it's a good example of the type of work I'm able to do for a company with short time constraints and very little direction to offer.

"Steve worked as a web designer for our company for multiple years and his ability to produce work on time and deliver a concept that met our requirements was unmatched. I would have no issues recommending Steve for small, medium or large projects."

Mike Wonnacott, Marketing Director, DM Contact Management

23/06/09 DM Contact: Carton for GenF20 Plus.

The carton for GenF20 Plus

Responsibilities: Concept Development & Design.

Technologies: Illustrator CS4, Modo 401

This carton design was the first of many steps in taking DM Contact's products in the direction of cleaner, high quality, and coherent design with more customer-friendly recognizable branding. This carton is still in use.

"Steve is a true professional - this is demonstrated both in his work product and in the way he interacts with other people on all levels. He is calm under pressure and delivers quality results on time."

Andrew MacKay, Owner, DM Contact Management

28/03/10 Razoo: Print materials.

Razoo's print collateral

Responsibilities: Design.

Technologies: Illustrator & Indesign CS4

These papers were designed to help Razoo (A non-profit fund-raising company) to teach people about themselves in a compact, attractive, easy to absorb format. It contained a Company 101 (2 pages), Staff Biographies (1 page) and a FAQ (2 pages). The final result is great - The files can be printed anywhere due to lax printing technology requirements, and the pdf files are very screen friendly so they can be distributed freely as well.

A lot of the design assets were inspired by or came from their website, which was an excellent foundation for this project.

10/08/09 Shawn Allen: Everblue Evergreen Album Art

Shawn Allen's Everblue Evergreen Album Cover

Responsibilities: Graphic Design.

Technologies: Illustrator CS4, Nikon D40

This package was a cardboard CD sleeve rather than a plastic case. The artwork consisted of an image for the front, back, and the compact disc itself.

The imagery was intended to be an abstract representation of the sun or sunset, plant life, and the sky rolled into one while maintaining a subtle use of color and photographs. The final design also needed to suit the album's tone.

01/07/08 Unnamed Artist: Set of Concepts for Album Cover

Image of the 'Zeppelin' Cover Art

Responsibilities: Graphic Design.

Technologies: Fireworks 8

I worked with a band to create these materials. Unfortunately they were never put to use, but they may be reworked in the future for another band. The concept was fantasy, post apocalyptic, and they wanted a zeppelin. The budget was low but it turned out great.

Here's a gallery of bits and pieces of the artwork that was commissioned. On the CD sleeve cover, the band name and track listing is out of the frame.

13/02/10 Mow Victoria: Website for Victoria Landscaping Company.

Example of a layout designed for Mow Victoria

Responsibilities: Layout, Graphics, Coding.

Technologies: XHTML, CSS, Javascript, PHP, Photoshop CS4

Mow Victoria contracted me to design this website from the ground up with the goal of creating something simple that encouraged potential customers to e mail or pick up the phone and actually make a connection when searching for a landscaper online. As more and more people turn to search engines to discover local services, this website seemed essential to growing their business. The company also had me design signs, decals, and business cards. Visit the site for a closer look.

The Mow Victoria logo was produced by a different designer previous to this job.

04/25/09 Andrew Slade: Website Layout for Victoria Jazz Artist.

Example of a layout designed for Andrew Slade

Responsibilities: Layout & Graphics

Technologies: CSS, Photoshop CS4, Flash CS4

I was contracted to design this site's layout and graphics. The website coding and launch was coordinated primarily by Wes Shelley, but I lent a hand at a few points. My help mostly involved a flash audio player, some CSS issues, some image optimization, and general consultation.

You can see the finished website here, and take a look at my initial design before it was sliced and made into a functioning website.

23/06/09 DM Contact: Website for Natural Health Sciences.

The Natural Health Sciences home page

Responsibilities: Layout, Graphics, Coding, Management.

Technologies: XHTML, CSS, PHP, SVN, Photoshop CS4, Flash CS4

I designed this website while working with DM Contact Management. Its intention was to create an online presence that customers could discover after or even before purchasing the NHS family of products. Prior to this website, the presence wasn't friendly, felt too corporate, and didn't encourage customers to explore other products from the company.

My layout was chosen over three others it competed with. The entire website was completed in just over 2 weeks. This time span includes the design phase.

The Natural Health Sciences website is still live and primarily based on my original design.
